BlackBerry Curve 8330 OS 5.0.0.230 Review

News — Tags: , — editor @ 12:08 pm on September 30, 2009

The leaked version of OS 5.0.0.230 was released on the crackberry site Monday September 28, 2009.  The OS has a great feel to it so far, there are some down sites to it although, currently there are several applications that do not run smoothly on the device.

The SMS layout seems to be much better it has the bubble chat and log from the phone number in one line instead of having it showing in several.  The OS seems to be organized better then the previous release 4.5. BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 is not supported so for those users that have the 5.0 BBM this will be kind of a let down.  Also themes for the 83xx are not working properly on the OS there is some over lapping of text, and doesnt seem to be able to recognise some trackwheel movements.

BlackBerry Tour: 5.0.0.230 Review

News, Reviews — Tags: , , , , — editor @ 8:20 pm on September 21, 2009

I’ve been testing .230 for a few days and I must say I haven’t noticed many improvements from it over .191.

OS ScreenUpdate Screen

We all know the basics of what 5.0 brings to the field but I will point out a few glitches I have experienced over the past few days (most reoccurring from .191)

  • Bluetooth Audio disconnecting after a few songs.
  • Media Player silencing songs.
  • Home screen refreshing issues.
  • Threaded SMS messages not appearing correctly.
  • Deleting Prior on SMS not working correctly.
  • Bluetooth slow to turn on, sometimes failing the first try.

Overall the battery life is much better in 5.0 than it was in 4.7.1 but you won’t notice much of a difference between .191 and .230

Improvements over .191:

  • Speed throughout the entire O.S. is faster.
  • Better call quality.
  • Slightly faster boot time.

If you have the time it is definitely worth the upgrade from .191 and I would recommend anyone still using 4.7.1.53 (or .40)  to give it a shot.

5.0 compatible IM clients:

AIM 5.0

Yahoo 5.0

Gtalk 5.0

MSN 5.0

Note: As with any beta / unreleased application or operating system please install at your own risk. I would recommend backing up all files before attempting to load beta applications.

What does BlackBerry OS 5.0 mean for apps?

Commentary — Tags: , , , — editor @ 4:14 pm on September 20, 2009

RIM has been marching towards their official release of OS 5.0, and have just released Beta 3 of their 5.0 development kit. Besides all the great UI updates such as the new load screen, it comes with a laundry list of new features and APIs available for developers. What does that mean for you? New apps! Some of the big pain points with the 4.x APIs are being corrected, and some things you simply couldn’t do before are being unlocked.

Lets walk through the top 5 new features, and look at why they are being added and just what apps may be able to take advantage of them. (more…)

Blackberry Storm: OS 5.0.0.230 Review

Reviews — Tags: , , , — editor @ 1:12 pm on

For all of you that have been on the fence about upgrading to 5.0 wait no longer.  The phone is extremely responsive with the latest upgrade, even more than the previous .191 version.

If you’ve never used 5.0 before the first thing you’ll notice is an extremely sexy black background with “Blackberry” in silver on the top, and an actual status bar for the boot up process. Once the phone is on, you’ll see the transitions between different apps. RIM has also added a feature we’ve all been waiting for since the release of the storm: Flick Scrolling.

For those of you that have used 5.0 you’ll notice that the social networking apps work. AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and Blackberry Messenger (4.7 at this point) all come pre-loaded, and work right after install.Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and other apps will have to be downloaded again, but you can get them straight off the Blackberry website.

Sounds like this is a big step in the right direction for RIM and the Storm, although I would have loved for them to also have AppWorld work with 5.0, but it does give us something to look forward to for the next update.

Here are  the links and instructions for the new software, enjoy!

You will need to install 5.0.0.191 first, then 5.0.0.230 on top of it.

Don’t forget to go to control panel and delete RIM Internal Tools, as well as C:/Program File> Common Files > Research In Motion> AppLoader and delete the Vendor file before installing on your device.
